The Process

  • Intentional

We chat by phone to discuss what’s challenging you and if ART can help. We schedule an intake session and we identify what we are wanting to eliminate, modify or process. Intake sessions are generally 90-100 minutes and do not require you to do anything other than show up comfortable. Often we can start treatment that same day.

  • Processing

We begin using a structured approach that combines visualization and eye movements to change how distressing memories and images are stored in the brain. This is a simple bi-lateral eye movement similar to the REM stage of sleep; or we can use tappers that emit a vibration in your hands.

This unique method quickly helps you process and overcome traumatic experiences, often leading to remarkable improvements often times in one to three sessions.

  • Rewiring

We process out the negative associations and sensations and incorporate new, healthier and more positive perspectives to replace them. We are not altering an experience or memory but rather our relationship to it. This short circuits the overwhelm and distress and moves the memory out of immediate recall.

  • Relief

Through this process we eliminate or reduce the negative impact of these experiences or feelings and replace them with calmer sensations often leading to permanent recovery. Sessions last 90-100 minutes and generally only take one to five depending on memories. Chronic or C-PTSD can take longer but relief can be felt immediately.

How do I know if it’s right for me?

Dawn Smith, LCSW/Polaris Counseling Center, PTSD and Trauma Treatment in Burke, VA

If you are experiencing anxiety, depression, OCD, phobias or PTSD associated with physical sensations or ruminating thoughts and you want to feel better, ART is for you.

This works beautifully on adults, teens and older children and pairs well as an adjunct, stand-alone approach that you can bring back to your therapist for processing, or for clients wanting more and deeper work with me.

ART relieves distress and empowers you to take control of your emotions and experiences. In a supportive and calming environment, you’ll feel safe and understood and completely awake and present.

Whether you’re facing recent trauma or long-standing emotional challenges impacting your life, ART offers a path to healing and resilience.

How is ART different from EMDR?

You may be familiar with EMDR, which is a common treatment for PTSD. I am trained in both and can attest that ART exceeds our highest goals for absolute relief.

While both EMDR and ART use rapid eye movement, there are some differences, and yet most people find ART is faster and more effective.

ART follows a specific set of guidelines, with a set number of eye movements, while EMDR is more flexible and left to the therapist’s discretion. EMDR tends to focus on the detail of a distressing memory, while ART turns attention to the associated emotions and feelings instead which is why more immediate relief is experienced.

EMDR usually requires between 5 to 15 sessions, but with ART’s more direct approach, people often find relief in one to three sessions.

Whatever you’ve experienced, I’m here to tell you that it doesn’t have to keep running your life.

  • Intake session (90-100 mins including first treatment): $350

Follow up sessions (75-90 mins): $275

Consultation is required to determine fit and provide all information. Sessions are scheduled without interruption to allow for full focus, privacy and relief.

Fees can be covered by HSA cards and payment will be required prior to your appointment.

Because a lot of preparation and care goes into each client session, unless for emergencies, which will be handled on a case by case basis, sessions can be rescheduled or cancelled if requested 48 hours or more in advance.

  • ART can be one intensive experience to get the most out of a session and focus time and energy on deep work without breaks between sessions.

Clients have found this to be highly effective, most requiring only one intensive.

We speak by phone and gather paperwork to discuss a plan and schedule uninterrupted time together. These custom, personal sessions target up to five experiences to ensure deep work while providing breaks and calming visualization between.

I schedule these personally for you and for approximately three-plus hours but without hard time limits to allow for true healing and comfort.

The pace is gentle, the work is powerful.

The most common side effect from these intensives is fatigue which is to be expected as your brain and body are doing some serious processing.

This impactful intensive is designed for chronic PTSD, C-PTSD or multiple issues co-existing where immediate and life-changing relief is needed.

    Intensives start at: $900

  • Reach out herefor a consultation and more information. If we determine ART is a good fit, we move to paperwork, scheduling and goals. This is entirely non-invasive and minimal side effects can include fatigue (much like a deep meditation). You can drive after but it is recommended to return home or not have a busy day following treatment.

I look so forward to sharing this with you.
